The Edo State chapter of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) says it has recovered two bodies and rescued six after a bus plunged into the Ovia River.
Daily Trust reports that the accident happened on Thursday evening on the Benin-Lagos highway.
Edo FRSC Sector Commander, Cyril Mathew, said: “Six people were rescued alive, while one was recovered dead yesterday. Another body was recovered dead today.”
Mathew said the accident happened when the bus heading to Port Harcourt from Lagos veered off the road and plunged into the river.
He said several passengers were still trapped inside the river.
According to him, FRSC began the rescue mission on Thursday and continued till Friday.
The sector commander, however, noted that the chances of survival of the remaining passengers in the river are slim.
He said local divers had been contacted to recover the trapped passengers.
“We have engaged divers to help recover the bodies, but negotiations are ongoing. The divers are asking for N2 million to carry out the recovery,” he said.
