29 Abuja internet fraud suspects to face trial
At least 29 persons arrested by the operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission would face trial if found guilty of their involvement in Internet fraud and related offences.
The EFCC disclosed this in a statement made available on its Facebook page on Thursday.
According to the anti-graft agency, the suspects were arrested on Wednesday by its operatives in the Federal Capital Territory.
The agency added that their arrest followed an intelligence report it received about the activities of the suspects.
The statement noted that following the tip-off, the EFCC operatives stormed the Apo, Gwarimpa, and Katampe areas of the FCT and arrested the 29 suspects.
The statement read, “Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission EFCC Abuja Zonal Command on Wednesday, May 8, 2024, arrested 29 suspected internet fraudsters.
“They were arrested at Apo, Gwarimpa, and Katampe areas of Abuja following actionable intelligence about their suspected involvement in internet fraud.”
The statement added that exhibits such as mobile phones, vehicles, and smartwatches were recovered from the suspects.
It added that the suspects would be arraigned in court upon the conclusion of an investigation.
“Items seized from the suspects include 43 phones of different makes, six vehicles, and two smartwatches. They will be charged to court as soon as investigations are concluded,” the statement noted.
