    Dr Steven Bagshaw, a senior medical doctor with University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital, UPTH was released on Saturday evening one week after he was abducted.

    He was abducted by yet to be identified group of gunmen at the gate of his residence near GTB Rumuokoro, Port Harcourt, Rivers State last Saturday evening.

    The news of his release was broken in a short press statement signed by Dr. Hope Avundaa, the Secretary, Nigerian Medical Association, NMA, Rivers State branch which on Saturday night.

    In the statement, Dr. Hope Owhondaa Avundaa said:”Good evening esteem members of NMA Rivers State, it’s with great joy we announce the release of our dear colleague Dr. Bagshaw Stephen this evening from his captors, he is alive and well.

    “We thank everyone who was involved in securing his release, from the family friends who raised alarm, to security agents who followed leads to the indefatigable NMA chairman who followed through all ground works, all Glory to God. Dr. Hope Avundaa Secretary, NMA RS.”

    At the time of filing this report, the Rivers State Police Command was yet to issue any statement concerning the Medical Doctor’s freedom. 

    It was not also clear if the medical doctor was released after money was paid because the kidnappers had earlier contacted the family for ransom, just as the Police said it had deployed tactical units to trail the kidnappers.
