• Tells workers to resist anti-democratic policies
Leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), yesterday, urged members nationwide to shelve their grievances for a formidable opposition against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the next general elections.
They said that all hands must be on deck to ensure that PDP returns to the Presidential Villa and takes over governance in Lagos State on May 29, 2027, stressing it could only be achieved if the party would be united, not divided.
The leaders include Life Board of Trustees (BoT) members, Chief Bode George and Dr Charles Akintoye; current BoT members, Senator Kofoworola Bucknor Akerele and Dr Abimbola Ogunkelu; Chairman PDP Southwest, Kamorudeen Kosolowe; and PDP State Chairman, Philip Aivoji, who is also the host of the event, tagged: “Towards a roadmap for a better PDP in Lagos.”
George, who is also a former deputy National Chairman, in his speech, stated that the bad state of the socio-economic indices of Nigeria called for sober reflection.
George said that since the PDP left the Presidential Villa in 2015 and in the last nine years, Nigerians had seen the difference between the PDP and APC and Nigerians had been yearning for a return of the PDP to set the country on the path of recovery.
He noted that the PDP had another opportunity before the next election in 2027 to bury their differences and put on their thinking caps. George also noted that the party was suffering because of a self-inflicted crisis, adding that it was time reconciliation should be on top of the party’s agenda. He said: “We should bury our individual ambitions now and not allow the PDP to crumble. We have no choice but to put our house in order.”
The elder statesman stressed that if the issues in the party were not addressed urgently, it would mean some members of the party were working for the APC or against the interest of the party.
On his part, Aivoji said unity is not just a word but a collective commitment to putting aside personal interests and grievances for the greater good of the party.
“As members of the PDP in Lagos State, we must prioritise unity above everything else. Only through unity can we harness our collective strength and make meaningful progress.
“Reconciliation is the cornerstone upon which we can build a stronger and more cohesive party. It involves forgiveness, understanding, and a willingness to move forward together. Let us embrace reconciliation as a foundation for rebuilding trust and solidarity within our party.”
The party, also in a statement to commemorate Workers Day, said the economic policies of the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led Federal Government had undermined all known tenets of democracy.
It commended Nigerians for remaining steadfast “despite the asphyxiating and life-discounting conditions occasioned by the ill-implemented economic and fiscal policies of the APC administration.
The party, in a message to Nigerian workers, charged them to use their resilient spirit to resist “all anti-people tendencies that seek to compromise and undermine the democratic tenets of freedom, Rule of Law, accountability and probity in the country”
