In a surprising political shift, Idris Salman, the representative of Kabba-Bunu/Ijumu Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, has defected from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Salman, who secured his seat in the 2023 National Assembly elections under the ADC, announced his defection during a plenary session. His decision, he stated, came after extensive consultations with his constituents.

“I took this decision after a wide range of consultations with members of my Constituency,” Salman said in his address.
The announcement was met with cheers from APC lawmakers. However, it was not without controversy. The Minority Whip of the House, Ali Isah, immediately called on the Speaker, Tajudeen Abbas, to declare Salman’s seat vacant, insisting that Salman should seek a fresh mandate from his new party if he wished to continue in the legislative chamber. This call was disregarded as the House Leader, Julius Ihonvbere, escorted Salman to greet some APC lawmakers present at the session.
The defection marks a significant political realignment and is likely to have ramifications within both the ADC and APC as the 10th Assembly continues its legislative activities.
