The Nigeria Muslim League Group (NIMUL) on Saturday evening expressed strong opposition to the rumours making the rounds about the appointment of Daniel Bwala as spokesman by President Tinubu.
According to Professor Mika’il Jibrin, spokesman for NIMUL, while President Tinubu has the right to appoint anyone following the leave of absence by Chief Ajuri Ngelale, the group strongly kicked against Bwala’s appointment.
Bwala, a prominent member of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, has been critical of President Tinubu and Vice President Shettima’s Muslim/Muslim ticket before the 2023 presidential election.
He said NIMUL could not trust Bwala in a position where he would be privy to critical issues that could make or mar Nigeria as a country.
The group cited the example of Ngelale, who faced challenges for defending Tinubu’s government, and questioned how someone who had championed a campaign of calumny not just against Tinubu, but Muslims, be brought into such a sensitive position.
He said: “President Tinubu should understand that Nigerian Muslims appreciate respect and trust from the Presidency, and therefore, NIMUL advises the President to look for other individuals worthy of trust.
“Bwala is seen as an opportunist trying to destroy what he did not build, and NIMUL urges the President to choose a person with proven integrity,” he said.
The group prayed that President Tinubu would reconsider the appointment and choose someone who has not engaged in issues that could create tension and political crisis.
NIMUL believes that the appointment can undermine the unity and political cohesion of the country, and therefore, urges caution.
The group reiterated its commitment to the peace and tranquility of Nigeria and advised the president to prioritise these values in his appointments.
NIMUL, therefore, called on all Nigerians to join them in rejecting this appointment, urging President Tinubu to make a more informed decision.
“NIMUL remains committed to the well-being and progress of Nigeria and will continue to speak out against decisions that could harm the country,” he added.
