The Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (PCNGI) has launched a nationwide Transport Fare Reduction Programme aimed at lowering transport costs and promoting the adoption of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) as a cleaner, more affordable alternative to traditional fuels.

This is contained in a statement issued by Michael Oluwagbemi, Program Director/Chief Executive, PCNGI on Friday.

The initiative kicked off today in Abuja, with plans to extend to other parts of the country.

As part of the programme, PCNGI signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), covering the Abuja-Itakpe-Ajaokuta-Adavi route. Under this agreement, NURTW members will convert their fleet vehicles to CNG, resulting in a 30-40% reduction in transport fares for commuters.

On Saturday, September 28th, 2024, the initiative will expand further with commercial vehicle open days at 38 centres in Kaduna, Abuja, Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, Delta, and Edo States. The open days are designed to incentivize commercial transport operators to adopt CNG-powered vehicles.

In another significant move, PCNGI is set to partner with the Nigeria Police Trust Fund (NPTF) on Monday, September 30th, 2024, to implement the Nigerian Police CNG Conversion Programme. This programme will train police cadets to manage strategic CNG conversion centres being established by the NPTF, according to PCNGI Programme Director Michael Oluwagbemi.

In celebration of Nigeria’s 64th Independence Anniversary on October 1st, 2024, PCNGI will launch a CNG Tricycle Empowerment Programme in collaboration with the Ministry of Youths. This initiative aims to empower over 2,000 Nigerian youth by providing them with CNG-powered tricycles for commercial use.

The following day, October 2nd, 2024, PCNGI will roll out the Kogi State Conversion Incentive Programme, handing over CNG-powered buses to the state’s mass transit authority for interstate routes to Abuja. Additionally, three new CNG conversion sites will be inaugurated in the state.

The week’s activities will conclude in Ekiti State, where PCNGI will hand over more CNG-powered buses to the state’s mass transit organisation and inaugurate four new CNG conversion centres to serve the route between Ekiti and Abuja.
