Seven students of the Federal University of Lafia who were abducted from their off-campus accommodation in Gandu village last Wednesday have regained their freedom.

The students, made up of four males and three females were released on Sunday evening through a joint effort of military and other security operatives.

Channels Television quoted the President of Student Representative Council of FULAFIA, Ibrahim Ogabo, as confirming the release of the students in a phone conversation.

The students were said to be admitted at the school’s clinic for treatment after their release from custody of their abductors.

The abduction of the students was confirmed by Abubakar Ibrahim, Head of Information and Public Relations of the institution.

According to him, the incident happened outside the premises of the university and for now, they cannot ascertain the numbers of students abducted, their names or departments.

Also, DSP Ramhan Nansel, Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) confirmed the incident last Thursday.

The PPRO, however, explained that DCP Shettima Muhammed, Acting Commissioner of Police in the state, had deployed adequate security patrol around the university to maintain law and order and to protect the area.

The students of the institution on Thursday embarked on a peaceful protest over the persistent spate of kidnappings around the school.

The protesting students obstructed free flow of traffic in Lafia/Makurdi road for many hours and it took the intervention of security agencies to bring the situation under control.
