A member of the Nigerian’s Federal House of Representatives representing Ukwa East/West Federal Constituency of Abia State, Hon. Chris Nkwonta, has defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Nkwonta’s defection was formally announced during Wednesday’s plenary session by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas.

Reacting to the development, the Deputy Minority Leader, Hon. Aliyu Madaki, called on the Speaker to declare Nkwonta’s seat vacant, citing the relevant constitutional provision regarding defections.
In response, Speaker Abbas noted that he was aware of a faction within the PDP, which may have influenced Nkwonta’s decision to seek a new political home. He hinted that the existence of this faction might justify the lawmaker’s move.
