The National President of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), Aminu Mu’azu Maifata, has expressed his condolences to the victims of the devastating flood that recently hit Maiduguri, Borno State.
Speaking on behalf of the chairmen of the 774 local government areas across Nigeria, Maifata sympathised with the families who lost loved ones and properties as a result of the disaster.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the ALGON President conveyed deep concern for the affected communities and extended the association’s support to the government and people of Borno State during this challenging time. He also called on the Federal Government to take immediate action by declaring a state of emergency in Maiduguri and providing adequate resources to assist the victims.
“We commiserate with the families who have suffered losses in this disaster, and our thoughts remain with them. This tragedy requires urgent government intervention,” Maifata said.
Maifata further urged the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and other relevant bodies to expedite the distribution of relief materials to the flood-ravaged areas. He emphasised the need for swift and coordinated efforts to prevent future occurrences, advocating for a multi-stakeholder approach to address the root causes of the floods and to ensure that necessary support is provided.
As the floodwaters continue to wreak havoc, ALGON assures the people of Maiduguri that they are not alone in their time of need and that the association stands ready to support recovery efforts.
