As part of efforts to ameliorate the suffering of victims of the flooding in Illela Local Government Area of Sokoto State, the state governor, Ahmed Aliyu and the leader of the All Progressives Congress in the state, Aliyu Wamakko, have gifted over N30m to the victims.
reports that over 600 households who were affected by floods in the local government area are expected to benefit from the gesture, which includes 1,000 mats and blankets, among others.
The Chairman of the local government area, Sirajo Shehu MaiBala, disclosed the figure while briefing Gov. Ahmed Aliyu when he visited the flooded areas and the displaced communities.
According to him, the devastating floods occurred on August 3, and it affected over 600 households in the area.
The displaced people, he added, are taking refuge in schools and filling stations around the area.
MaiBala commended the governor for the assessment visit, which he said would further rekindle the hope of the displaced persons of getting assistance from the state government.
In his remarks, Aliyu commiserated with the displaced persons and the entire Illela community over the devastating floods that ravaged the area.
“What I have seen in Illela is unbelievable. The flood is just too much.
“I want to assure you that the state government would come to the aid of the affected families so as to make their lives meaningful,” he assured.
Thereafter, the governor visited one of the displaced camps in Illela Secondary School, where he directed the immediate repairs of the school, which has for years been in a sordid state of neglect.
Aliyu restated his administration’s commitment to making educational institutions comfortable for teaching and learning.
The Secretary to the State Government, Muhammad Bello Sifawa, announced a cash donation of N20 million by the state government as well as N10 million from Sen. Aliyu Wamakko.
Other items donated to the flood victims by the state government included 1000 pieces of mats and blankets each, as well as one truck of rice.
Highlights of the occasion was the flagg-off of the distribution of the relief materials to the affected communities.
