Ahead of the 2025 governorship election in Anambra State, Senator Uche Ekwunife, who represented the Anambra Central Senatorial zone, has dismissed speculations circulating within political circles that she is running for the office of Deputy Governor.
Senator Ekwunife, who is also Director General of the South East Governors’ Forum, said that, though she remains an APC stalwart, she will not be running for Deputy Governor in 2025.
She insisted that the rumour was unfounded, adding that she would not be on the ballot as Deputy Governor, as no one runs to be a deputy governor. The position, she said, is often a prerogative of the party and whoever becomes the party’s candidate.
“As the DG of the South East Governors’ Forum, I am focused on my job. I intend to devote my time to the service and to the cause of the South East Governors, which is to build strong economic, political, and regional cooperation for the South East.”
She commended the South East Governors for their cohesion and willingness to change the narrative of the South-East for good.
“Top on the agenda of the governors are ongoing conversations around maintaining law and order, energy supply, modern transportation, and infrastructure to connect the major cities in the South-East through rail transport, etc.,” she said.
