Kano State House of Assembly has commenced a legislative process for the amendment of the Emirate Council Law 2019.
The recall of the law followed a motion moved by the Majority Leader, Lawan Yan Gurasa (representing Dala Constituency), during plenary, yesterday.
Yan Gurasa moved the motion for the recall of the law under matters of urgent public importance, seeking the approval of the lawmakers for urgent amendment.
Upon raising the motion before the Speaker, Jibril Falgore, a member representing Dawakin-Kudu Constituency, Shu’aibu Rabiu, seconded it.
The assembly unanimously adopted the motion for the amendment of the Emirate Council Law and reserved it for the next legislative process.
Although the majority leader was silent over the rationale behind the motion, the assembly had reportedly received a series of petitions from various interest groups calling for the amendment of the law that led to the balkanisation of the traditional institution in the state.
The Emirate Council Law, which was amended by former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje in 2019, broke the history of Kano Emirate and introduced five first-class emirs in the state for Rano, Karaye, Gaya, Bichi and Kano emirates.
Ganduje’s dramatic action led to the dethronement of the 14th Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II and the subsequent appointment of Aminu Ado Bayero as the 15th.
There is tension in the air on whether the amendment will lead to the revocation of the four additional emirates established by Ganduje’s administration or not.
There are also insinuations over whether the fresh amendment ostensibly being orchestrated by the state government was intended to return the former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) as emir of Kano or not.
