Anxiety has gripped 1,814,344 candidates who wrote the May/June 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) as they await the release of the results this month.
The 22,229 secondary schools nationwide that presented candidates for the school examination and parents of the students are not left out of the anxiety.
The students, schools and parents have looked forward to the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) to release the results in the first week of August.
Daily Sun can authoritatively state that the results of the May/June 2024 WASSCE would not be released on Monday, August 5 as speculated.
A source confirmed that the council had concluded the marking of answer scripts and were rounding off the process to ensure a hitch-free release.
Investigations revealed that many of the candidates wrote the 2024 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) as awaiting result candidates and would require the WASSCE results to secure admission.
An educationist, Adeyemi Olalekan, confirmed the anxiety among the students, schools and parents, who continue to call to ask him when the results would be released.
According to him, based on the WAEC policy of 45 days after the last paper, the results of the May/June 2024 WASSCE would be released either on August 6, 7 or 8.
“I understand the anxiety of the students, schools and even parents. Many universities have started the process of the admission exercise after the release of the cut-off marks by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation (JAMB) heads of tertiary institutions,’’ Olalekan said.
Head of National Office (HNO) of WAEC, Dr. Amos Josiah Dangut, had earlier said the examination would take place between Tuesday, April 30 and Monday, June 24, 2024 in Nigeria, spanning seven weeks and six days, adding, “the WASSCE will be conducted in four WAEC member countries, namely: Nigeria, Gambia, Sierra-Leone and Liberia.’’
The HNO said in line with the council’s tradition, the May/June 2024 results would be released 45 days after the conduct of the last paper, while the certificates would be printed and issued to schools in less than 90 days after the release of results.
Dangut further disclosed results would be released along with the digital copies of candidates’ certificates, which can be accessed on the digital certificate platform.
