Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar says Nigeria’s security agencies should be held accountable for what he describes as the arbitrary detention of local leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo.

In a statement shared via his official X (formerly Twitter) account, Atiku condemned the actions of the police and other security forces, arguing that they undermine the principles of peace and fair competition, especially as the Edo State governorship election draws near.

Atiku emphasized that the detainment of opposition members threatened the PDP’s ability to function as a competitive political force.

He called on the Inspector General of Police and other top security officials to either release the detained PDP members or present them before a court if there are legitimate reasons for their arrest.

“The very essence of tranquility is imperiled when the state’s federal assets are wielded to harass and intimidate political adversaries,” Atiku stated, warning that such actions could jeopardize peace and harmony during the electoral process.

As the off-season election approaches, tensions between political parties have been rising, with accusations of bias and unfair treatment by the authorities becoming a central issue.
