Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has called for reform that will “sanitize” the Nigeria Police Force.

Atiku made the call while reacting to the “heartbreaking” murder of Bolanle Raheem, a Lagos lawyer.

The incident happened on Sunday in the Ajah area of Lagos when the deceased and her family were returning from Christmas service.

Reports had it that some officers attached to the Ajiwe police station in Ajah had ordered the car conveying the family to stop and during this time, one of the officers allegedly shot at the car and the bullet hit the lawyer.

In a tweet on Monday, Abubakar also called on the police authorities to ensure that the officers responsible for the act are brought to justice.

“The shooting of Bolanle Raheem by a police officer is heartbreaking and stands condemned,” he wrote.

“This latest shooting calls to attention the urgent need for Police reforms that will sanitize the Force and bring it in line with best policing practices.

“I call on the police authorities and the Justice system to expedite action on the matter, as justice delayed is justice denied. This will serve as a deterrent to the incidents of the irresponsible shooting of innocent citizens by law enforcement agents.

“I express my deepest condolences to the family, friends, and the Nigerian Bar Association, in particular its Lagos chapter. May her soul rest in peace.”

Meanwhile, Benjamin Hundeyin, Lagos police command spokesperson, has confirmed that an assistant superintendent of police (ASP) who shot at the deceased and two other officers are currently in custody.

Also, Usman Baba, the inspector-general of police, has ordered speedy investigation and prosecution of the officers responsible for the “ugly and unprofessional act”.
