Former Nigerian Vice President Atiku Abubakar has called on the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to release the detained leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo State. Atiku made this appeal on Thursday via the social media platform X (formerly Twitter).

He criticized the arrests, which took place just before the governorship election, calling it an abuse of power by the police and other security agencies.

Atiku condemned the use of federal resources to target political opponents, stating that such actions undermine democracy.

In his post, Atiku urged the authorities to either release the PDP leaders or charge them in court if there are legitimate reasons for holding them.

“The time has come for our security agencies to be held accountable. Arresting local PDP leaders right before an election is a serious violation of the principles of peace and fairness,” Atiku wrote.

He emphasized that the Inspector-General of Police and other security leaders should act quickly to restore fairness and avoid using federal powers to intimidate the opposition.
