In a significant political development in Kano State, Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin has officially welcomed more former members of the New Nigerian People’s Party (NNPP) into the All Progressives Congress (APC).
A statement from Barau’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ismail Mudashir, confirmed the defections. Hundreds of NNPP members from Madobi and Gwale local government areas (LGAs) joined the APC during the weekend. Notably, these areas are strongholds of key NNPP figures, including Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.
Among the new APC members is Yahaya Sa’idu Kwankwaso, a former councillor from Kwankwaso Ward in Madobi LGA. He joined alongside other NNPP leaders, such as Hon. Abdulhamid Ahmad Diso, a former deputy speaker from Diso Ward in Gwale LGA, and Hon. Shu’aibu Isa Kubaraci.

During a reception ceremony for the defectors, Barau assured them of equal opportunities within the APC. “In the APC, everyone is treated equally. This is a party for all, where no one is excluded,” he stated.
He went further to describe the defections as a sign of declining influence for the NNPP in Kano. Barau confidently predicted APC’s dominance in the 2027 elections, stating, “The NNPP is now a shadow of itself in Kano North. In Kano South, APC will soon eliminate its presence, leaving it confined to a few streets in Kano Central.”
Barau also emphasized his commitment to working alongside the defectors to advance Kano State’s development. He aligned his efforts with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s vision of national progress and prosperity.
This wave of defections highlights the growing strength of the APC in Kano, setting the stage for future political shifts in the state.
