From Timothy Olanrewaju, Maiduguri
A major bridge linking the central part of Maiduguri with the south-eastern axis of the city collapsed on Friday two days after massive flooding. The Lagos Bridge along the popular Lagos Street was flooded before the Tuesday flooding, fueling fears the facility could cave in. It, however, collapsed early Friday morning, cutting off residents from the city centre. Hundreds of residents were stranded at the bridge as they parked their vehicles.
The bridge provides access to two critical institutions, the University of Maiduguri and its teaching Hospital, UMTH.
