Peter Obi, the 2023 Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party (LP), has once again raised concerns over the Federal Government of Nigeria’s financial recklessness and misplacement of priorities in fund allocation.
Obi described the continued deployment of public resources to nonessential areas of development as unacceptable.
He highlighted Nigeria’s poor position in global school enrollment averages, contrasting the government’s budget of a mere N1 billion for the construction of hostels in 12 tertiary institutions with a budget of N10 billion for building car parks and recreational facilities.
On his verified X platform, the former Anambra State governor wrote: “As the giant of Africa, I remain concerned about our fiscal indiscipline as a nation. Imagine the situation in our education sector where the global average for secondary school enrollment is above 80%, while Nigeria’s is 28%.
“The global average for tertiary school enrollment is above 55%, while Nigeria’s is less than 15%. Yet our budget for the National Assembly car parks is N6 billion, and the budget for the National Assembly recreational facilities is N4 billion.
“ Approved for the construction of hostels in 12 tertiary institutions is just N1 billion.
“It is time for us to stop this financial indiscipline and embrace financial discipline by prioritising the allocation of resources to critical areas of human and national development.”
