LAGOS – The Defence Headquarters is determined to apprehend the perpetrators of the 17 officers and soldiers’ killings, who were carrying out their duties to maintain peace and security in the Delta State community, regardless of the time it may take.

Gen. Christopher Musa, the Chief of Defence Staff, CDS, relayed this during a press conference following a collaborative security meeting involving the Military, Police, and Para-Military forces in Abuja on Tuesday.

Represented by Major Gen Emeka Onumajuru, the Chief of Defence Training and Operation, the CDS affirmed the military’s ongoing efforts to track down those responsible for the officers and soldiers’ deaths in the recent Okuama incident.

He mentioned, “There have been inquiries about the events in Okuama. I want to assure you that the loss of 17 armed forces personnel will not go unanswered. Remember how persistent the pursuit of Osama Bin Laden was.

Therefore, we are committed to locating the perpetrators of the 17 military personnel’s deaths. Regardless of the duration, we will pursue them relentlessly.”

General Musa highlighted that the Defence headquarters is reassessing operations in the North West Zone to enhance collaboration and outcomes. He emphasized the consolidation of various operations under one Commander to improve effectiveness.

He urged the North West communities in Zamfara, Katsina, Sokoto, and Kebbi to refrain from aiding or sharing information with terrorists. He mentioned an incident where locals informed terrorists after troops got stuck in a swamp during a patrol, leading to the terrorists publicizing the event on social media.

Regarding Turji, he described him as a power-seeking individual, assuring that they will capture him soon. The Chief of Defence Staff emphasized that they will swiftly address the situation, stating that Turji’s followers are individuals disconnected from any loyalty.

“It is essential for us all to join forces with the armed forces and security agencies to prevent terrorists from freely moving within our communities”.

“Please refrain from offering any assistance or divulging information about troop movements, as this has been a significant factor contributing to the ongoing situation in many areas”.

“I have consistently emphasized to Nigerians that asymmetric warfare should be prevented from starting because once it begins, it becomes a highly challenging operation”.

“You are up against non-state actors who do not wear uniforms, making it hard to identify them, while they are familiar with you. Without the community’s support, it becomes exceedingly difficult to combat such threats within the communities”.
