    ABUJA – In a historic moment for Nigerian journalism, Comrade Grace Ike of the Advocate Broadcasting Network (ADBN) was sworn in as the first female Chairperson of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Council.

    Ike’s election marks a significant milestone in the history of the NUJ FCT, as she secured 445 affirmative votes to emerge as the 17th leader of the Council. Her victory is not only a testament to her leadership qualities but also to her longstanding commitment to advancing the interests of journalists.

    Before assuming this prestigious role, Ike served as the Vice Chairperson of the NUJ FCT Correspondents’ Chapel and as the Chairperson of the House of Representatives Press Corps, roles in which she demonstrated her deep dedication to the welfare and development of her fellow journalists.

    In her inaugural address at the NUJ FCT headquarters in Abuja, Ike outlined her vision to transform the Council, with a focus on improving members’ welfare, enhancing capacity building, advancing infrastructure development, and ensuring greater accountability.

    The newly sworn-in Chairperson expressed heartfelt gratitude to her supporters for their unwavering dedication and sacrifices. She reiterated her commitment to serving the union with transparency, inclusivity, and integrity. Reflecting on the significance of her election, Ike stated:
    As I step into this esteemed office, I am inspired by the timeless wisdom of John C. Maxwell, who said, ‘A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way.’ Guided by these words, we are committed to charting a course that fosters unity, drives progress, and upholds excellence within our union.

    I outline my vision for the NUJ FCT Council, which is rooted in five key pillars: enhancing the welfare of our members, providing continuous training, improving infrastructure, ensuring inclusivity, and maintaining the highest standards of professional integrity. Together, we will build a stronger, more vibrant union that supports the growth and development of every journalist.”

    The administration is committed to enhancing the well-being of its members by introducing affordable health insurance schemes and empowering initiatives.

    “A flagship program will provide 20 members with a 50% subsidy to enroll in the 2024/2025 Postgraduate Program at the International Institute of Journalism (IIJ), further expanding professional development opportunities.

    Top priorities also include transforming the FCT NUJ press center into a world-class facility and promoting regular sporting activities to encourage wellness and foster camaraderie among members.

    In partnership with the NUJ National Secretariat, the council is committed to advocating for the passage of the Media Enhancement Bill, which aims to safeguard and elevate the status of journalism as a respected profession.

    Ike has pledged to lead with transparency, ensuring that every voice is heard and that financial records are made accessible, fostering an environment of trust and accountability.

    “Addressing the growing concern of quackery in journalism, she pledged to uphold the profession’s integrity while working towards the establishment of a dedicated journalists’ village.

    In early 2025, a Creative Writing Workshop Endowment will be launched to foster creativity and innovation among members, providing a platform for nurturing the next generation of journalistic talent.”

    Ike urged all members of the NUJ FCT Council to unite in strengthening the union. Quoting an African proverb, she highlighted the power of collective action: “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.”

    Reaffirming her dedication to the union’s core values, Ike declared, “Together, we will build a legacy of professionalism, progress, and pride, a union that will serve as a guiding light for future generations.”

    Ike also extended her congratulations to the newly elected National Executive of the NUJ, under the leadership of Alhaji Alhassan Yahaya Abdulahi, describing their election as the beginning of a new and promising chapter for the union. She expressed the FCT Council’s commitment to supporting the advancement of journalism across Nigeria.

    As Ike steps into her new role, she reassured members of her unwavering determination to transform the council, emphasizing the need for actionable ideas and contributions from all stakeholders to propel the union forward.
