LAGOS – The Coalition of United Political Parties, CUPP, has attributed the shortcomings seen in the recently concluded Edo State governorship election to the eagerness and anti-democratic inclinations of politicians, stating that many politicians in the country embody anti-democratic forces.
CUPP, through its national publicity secretary, Comrade Mark Adebayo, stated that politicians, driven by their desperation, are the ones perpetrating electoral fraud, not the electoral body.
“The Edo state election was another blow to our country’s democratic reputation. Elections have turned into a scenario where the party with the best rigging tactics emerges victorious because almost all of them engage in rigging. It’s truly disheartening!
“It’s evident that the events in Edo did not contribute positively to our democracy. If the process lacked transparency, as confirmed by many on-the-ground observers, the validity of the results is questionable.”

“Indeed, it’s becoming increasingly clear that politicians, rather than INEC, bear significant responsibility for election irregularities, posing a grave threat to our democracy. Those vying for office in Nigeria often lack a true commitment to democratic values.
“Most of them embody anti-democratic elements and exhibit a notable absence of patriotism. Many current leaders act more as adversaries of the people, causing immense suffering to citizens while living extravagantly.”
CUPP also urged INEC to address the concerns raised about the election’s conduct. The accusation related to result collation must be clarified as it impacts its credibility.
CUPP highlighted that the manner in which the Edo governorship election results were compiled raises significant concerns, with many doubts lingering about the process’s integrity.
