The Anambra State Police Command has confirmed that gunmen attacked its station in Umunze, Orumba South Local Government Area, killing two officers.
In a statement issued in Awka on Monday, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, revealed that the attackers stormed the station with improvised explosives and opened fire, igniting a blaze that damaged parts of the facility.
Ikenga explained that the two officers on duty were killed while attempting to fend off the assailants. Their bodies have since been recovered and taken to a morgue.
The joint security forces, including personnel from the police, army, and navy, managed to recover five unexploded improvised explosives from the scene.
The Commissioner of Police in Anambra, CP Nnaghe Itam, visited the site to assess the damage.
He called on the public to provide any information that could assist in the ongoing investigation, assuring that all information would be treated with strict confidentiality. (NAN)
