Prince Kanunta Kanu, the older brother of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nanmdi Kanu, has said depriving Kanu food and medication in the Department of State Service custody, is a means of torturing him.

Kanu’s special counsel, Aloy Ejimakor and Kanu’s family had raised alarm that for nine days, the detained IPOB leader had not taken his drugs and had been starving, allegedly on the grounds that the DSS had informed them that it had no money to fund such.

According to Kanunta, “The deprivation of feeding, medication and sleeping in detention centres are weapons of torture.”

Kanunta, who raised a petition to the US State Department, UN Human Rights, EU Commission, UK Parliament, Rishi Sunak and the Canadian PM among others, said “it’s a shame in 24th century, inmates are starved to death in Nigeria.”

He flayed the Federal Government over neglect of detainees in the country despite the huge budgets to that effect.

“That’s Nigeria for real. Even detainee’s in prisons across the country buy their own mattresses to sleep on, yet huge budget is allocated for same.”

Ejimakor and Kanu’s family have concluded plans to raise more than N1m for Kanu’s feeding in the DSS custody in Abuja.
