The Medical and Dental Consultants Association of Nigeria (MDCAN) has sympathised with the Governor of Borno State, Prof. Babagana
Zulum and people of the state
over the unfortunate flood disaster
that claimed many lives and displaced over 500, 000 people from their homes in some parts of the state.
MDCAN in a Communique issued at the end of their National Executive Council (NEC) meeting lamented that the flood
had added to the numerous
humanitarian crises Borno
State had been grappling with over the years.
Meanwhile, the theme of the NEC meeting is “Health as a Sustainable Development Goal in Nigeria: Celebrating our Success and Strategizing for the Future”.
The communique which was jointly signed by the association President Prof. Aminu Mohammad and Secretary Prof. Daiyabu Ibrahim said NEC is deeply saddened by the devastation, lost of lives and property.
They urged the Ministry of Humanitarians Affairs and all other MDA’s to come to the aid of the affected people by providing relief materials to alleviate their suffering.

The Medical and Dental doctors also advocated for a
thorough maintenance of
dams with early warning signs of flood
or breakage to save
lives by making residents to
avoid or flee danger zone whenever the need arise.
MDCAN further tasked National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) and other agencies to take proactive measures to prevent the outbreak of communicable diseases in the flooded environment.
According to the doctors Federal Government should as matter of urgency conduct a comprehensive assessment of integrity of all the dams in Nigeria to forestalled future occurrence in any part of the country.
The Medical doctors also lamented the lingering insecurity situation in the country with Doctors and other healthcare workers as easy target even within the hospitals.
The communique further frowned at the Ministry of Health’s threat to apply punitive measures for legitimate demands of MDCAN and National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) requesting for an urgent action to be taken by Federal Government to ensure the safe release and bring to a closure the prolonged abduction of Prof. Ephraim Ekanem, Dr. Ganiyat Popoola and all other Nigerians in captivity .
