LAGOS – Nigerian Air Traffic Controllers’ Association (NATCA), has said that doubling of the global air traffic movement in the next 15 years poses a grave challenge to the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) and the civil aviation community.

A statement by Amos Edino, President of NATCA, said that since the creation of ICAO through the Chicago Convention in 1944, about 80 years ago, the global air traffic movement had been doubling every 15 years.

According to him, available statistics revealed that there are currently about 126,000 daily navigating the world to safely convey passengers and cargo, fearing that this figure may double in the next 15 years.

According to him, the enablers of such a movement were the Air Traffic Controllers (ATCOs), who he said regularly ensure safety in the airspace through their coordination.

He, however, applauded ICAO’s efforts in developing a global framework with implementation strategies in the form of the Global Air Navigation Plan (GANP) to address future challenges.

He, also appealed to stakeholders to align their policies and initiatives with ICAO’s strategic objectives that provide the global framework for managing the safe and efficient growth of air navigation, which he said was necessary for overcoming the challenges the sector envisaged in the future.

He added: “We have witnessed in the past 80 years, the evolution of civil aviation growth that led to the doubling of global air traffic movement every 15 years. This is unprecedented in our history.

“It is worth noting that the enablers of such a movement are the frontline professionals; the air traffic controllers, the unseen hands, whose skills, resilience, and aptitude in managing air traffic and airspace, are key to the successes achieved.

“NATCA aligns with ICAO’s strategic objectives and will along that line, continuously engage with stakeholders in driving initiatives that will enhance safety and air navigation efficiency to ensure a safe, interoperable, and seamless air space system to meet the needs of the global flying public.”

Edino extended his congratulatory message to ICAO for achieving this milestone and hoped that future collaboration would meet the global needs of a safe and efficient air navigation system.
