    The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Thursday presented Certificates of Return to the Governor-elect of Edo State, Senator Monday Okpebholo, and his running mate, Hon. Dennis Idahosa AS winners of last Saturday’s Edo governorship election.

    The presentation of the Certificates of Return ceremony which took place at the headquarters of INEC in Abuja was witnessed by the National Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr Abdullahi Ganduje, members of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) the reinstated Deputy Governor of Edo state, Comrade Philip Shaibu.

    Others present at the event were Senator Matthew Uroghide, General Cecil Esekhaigbe (retd), Senator Francis Alimikhena, Hon. Ogbeide Ihama, Hon. Omosede Igbinedion and Blessing Agbonmhere, among others.

    The Certificate of Return was represented to Okpebholo and his deputy by the National Commissioner supervising Edo State, Prof. Rhoda Gumus on behalf of INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu,

    Okpebholo defeated 17 other candidates to win the Saturday, 21 September 2024 Edo governorship election.

    According to the results declared by INEC’s returning officer, Prof. Faruk Adamu Kuta, the APC candidate secured 291,667 votes to defeat his his closest rival, Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who garnered 247,274 votes.

    Olumide Akpata of the Labour Party (LP) came third in the election with 22,763 votes.

    However, the PDP and its candidate have rejected the result of the election.

    They vowed that they will take legal steps to retrieve their mandate from the APC at the tribunal.
