The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Edo State, on Saturday, raised an alarm alleging that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is threatening violence before the September 21, 2024 Governorship elections.
The opposition party called on the police to arrest the PDP’s Asue Ighodalo Campaign Organisation Spokesman, Rev. Olu Martins, over comments indicating violent conduct in a viral video.
APC’s Edo State Chairman, Jarrett Tenebe, alleged that the Deputy Director-General of the Asue Ighodalo Campaign Organisation, Rev. Olu Martins, was seen calling for violence in the said video and should be arrested.
“Our party, the All Progressives Congress (APC) draws the attention of the Department of State Security Service, and the Inspector General of Police to the fact that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is threatening violence ahead of the September 21, 2024 Governorship elections.
“This is a clear indication of the desperation of the PDP, which is losing ground.
“In particular, we call on the security agencies to immediately arrest one Rev Olu Martins, who claims to be a preacher during the day but is actually a vandal at night.
“In a viral video as the Deputy Director General of the Asue Ighodalo Campaign Council, Rev Olu Martins is seen calling for the vandalization of campaign materials of opposition parties and threatening any opposition to the PDP candidate.
“In the event that the security agencies fail to rein Olu Martins and his ilks in, the alternative is a call for anarchy,” Tenebe said.
Tenebe urged the security agencies and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to take note of all these infractions.
The APC Chairman said it will not endure any form of violence or cultist activities perpetrated or sponsored by the state.
“On our part, we shall continue to work towards ensuring a peaceful and free election. However, our civility can only be guaranteed in an atmosphere of egalitarianism.”Tenebe said.
Reacting, Edo State Commissioner for Communication and Orientation, Chris Nehikhare said,” Threats of violence or disobedience have no place in our democratic process, and all parties should conduct themselves with decorum and respect for the law.
“It is essential that we focus on constructive dialogue and peaceful engagement rather than resorting to tactics that may incite division or unrest. The government remains committed to upholding the rule of law and will address any disruptive behaviour, regardless of one’s status or affiliation.” Nehikhare said.
