    BENIN – As the Edo Specialist Hospital (ESH) celebrates its 5th year anniversary, the state Commissioner for Health, Dr. Samuel Alli has called for stàkeholders’ collaboration and total commitment in the hospital’s mission to provide exceptional healthcare to the people of
    Edo State.

    The commissioner also announced the hospital’s desire to continue to collaborate with a research institute to establish itself as a global leader in medical research.

    Dr Alli who was speaking at the 5th year anniversary celebration of the hospital recalled that on the 22nd of June, 2019, Edo Specialist Hospital opened its doors to the public, offering
    comprehensive healthcare services in general medicine and surgery.

    According to him, “Since that historic day,
    we have grown from a trauma center providing accident and emergency care to a
    multi-specialist, secondary healthcare facility.

    “Our range of services now includes specialties
    in Medicine, Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Pediatrics, Ophthalmology and Optometry,
    Dentistry, ENT, Dialysis, IVF, Dermatology, Endocrinology, Endoscopy, Hematology,
    Cardiology, Orthopedics, Physiotherapy, Rheumatology, and Urology.

    “We also offer advanced diagnostic and radiological services, including state-of-the-art CT
    scan facilities.
    while our telemedicine capabilities have fostered global collaborations, allowing us
    to harness specialist skills and intellect to tackle medical challenges worldwide”

    The health commissioner also noted that in just five years, ESH has achieved remarkable milestones across various specialties, which include, Dialysis, Obstetrics and Gynecology, In-Vitro Fertilization (IVF),

    He said the hospital’s dialysis clinic is one of the most patronized in the state, reaching a
    record high of over 200 sessions in a month, adding that since inception, “we have successfully
    dialyzed numerous patients and expanded our capacity to four dialysis machines”.

    “Our Obstetrics and Gynecology: department provides comprehensive
    antenatal, neonatal, and postnatal services. We have proudly welcomed 2,518
    babies into the world, beginning with our first baby born in June 2020.

    “The IVF unit is one of our most significant achievements,
    boasting a success rate of 26% and 10 successful deliveries, including our first IVF
    baby, Miracle, born on the 2nd of August, 2022″ he said.

    On Surgery, the commissioner said ESH performed its first total hip replacement surgery in February 2024 and
    achieved its first brain tumor resection in 2020, both significant milestones in its
    surgical services.

    On Molecular Laboratory, he said during the COVID-19 pandemic, our molecular laboratory
    was one of only three in the country, serving the entire South-South region of Nigeria
    with COVID-19 molecular sample testing.

    “Our sophisticated 4-slice CT scan machine provides top-tier imaging,
    enabling us to perform advanced cardiac studies and other critical procedures that
    previously required travel to Lagos or Abuja”

    While speaking on collaborations, he said “Our partnership with Edo State University, Uzairue, has resulted in
    full medical accreditation for the university. We also collaborate with Benson Idahosa
    University and the State School of Nursing and are open to further collaborations”.

    “Looking to the future, Edo Specialist Hospital is committed to expanding our services and
    enhancing our capabilities, while our goals include:
    Introducing cardiac pacemaker insertion and removal services, which we aim to
    achieve this year”.

    On the hospital’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), he said, “In our commitment to giving back, we have
    conducted numerous outreach programmes, including administering free Hepatitis B and C vaccines to over 600 people.

    “Providing free HIV counseling and testing for over 70 individuals,
    conducting free cataract screenings for over 80 people, followed by 18
    subsidized cataract surgeries as well as offering free dental screenings to over 180 people, followed by subsidized
    dental services”

    The commissioner also inaugurated the 2024/25 Senior Leadership of the hospital. The team included Onome Debbie Akwara, chief executive officer (CEO), Dr Osagie Itohan Ebomwonyi, Director of Clinical Excellence (DICE), Dr Osaronse Anthony Aghimien, Chief Operations Officer (COO) and Dr Suleman Ozenoka, Clinical Excellence Coordinator (CEC), Radiology, Pharmacy, Medical Officers and Laboratory.

    Other members of the team are
    Dr Clement Ikponmwen, Clinical Excellence Coordinator (CEC), Surgical, Dr Itua Akhirevbulu, Clinical Excellence Coordinator (CEC), Emergency, Dr Martins Okhawere, Clinical Excellence Coordinator (CEC), Medical, Pediatrics and Dialysis, Harry Eboigbe, Chief People Operations Officer (CPOO) and Eunice Osarugue Eme, Chief Experience Officer (CXO).
