EFCC targets Bello’s ex-aides in corruption probe

As anticipation builds for former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello’s court appearance on October 24, 2024, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is reportedly preparing to investigate several aides who served under his administration from 2016 to 2024.
This move is aimed at strengthening the agency’s case against the former governor concerning allegations of corruption and misappropriation of public funds during his tenure.
Sources indicate that these investigations may lead to the arrest of the former aides, some of whom are currently serving in the present administration.
Their involvement is believed to have facilitated Bello’s alleged financial misconduct while in office.
Attempts to reach EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale for comments on the agency’s strategy regarding the case were unsuccessful.
However, insiders revealed that the EFCC possessed substantial evidence against Bello, far exceeding what has been filed in the ongoing Federal Court case in Abuja.
The agency is reportedly eager to proceed with its lawsuit against Bello, who has been evading arrest for several months.
On Wednesday, sources indicated that the EFCC had been cautious in advancing its case against the former governor, primarily due to the inability to bring him before the court to initiate a full trial.

An EFCC official stated, “We have more evidence against Bello than many might expect. He is aware that we have information regarding his alleged misappropriation during his governorship.”
The official added, “Bello’s attempts to evade arrest by relying on his successor, Governor Usman Ododo, who he believes enjoys immunity, cannot shield him indefinitely. He will eventually face justice; no one is above the law.”
Another high-ranking female EFCC official, speaking off the record due to the case’s sensitivity, indicated that additional charges may be filed against Bello, who served as governor for eight years.
She hinted at revelations that would emerge during the trial, stating, “Many of his supporters, including Civil Society Organizations and Kogi State Assembly lawmakers advocating for the removal of our chairman, may need to reconsider their positions when the full facts are presented.”
As the October 24 adjournment date approaches, Bello is expected to respond to a public summons and a new 16-count charge against him, alongside two other defendants, Umar Oricha and Abdulsalami Hudu.
The public summons was ordered by Justice Maryanne Anenih of the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in Maitama, following an application by the EFCC. The judge directed the EFCC to publish the summons in widely circulated newspapers and to deliver copies to Bello’s last known address.
The charges, filed on September 24, 2024, alleged a criminal breach of trust involving an amount of N110.4 billion. The case has already been postponed multiple times due to Bello’s absence from arraignment.
