The Nigeria Police has described a viral report that the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun has instructed citizens to physically assault and throw stones at police officers who request to search their phones as false.
Force Public Relations Officer, FPRO, Olumuyiwa Adejobi who said this in a statement issued on Sunday described the claim as ‘entirely false’ with no basis in reality.
According to him, Egbetokun has not issued any order encouraging the public to dish out violence to police officers. Adejobi therefore appealed to the public remain vigilant against misinformation and verify information through credible sources.
- Police smash 128 suspected hoodlums, recover dangerous weapons
- 4 Police officers suspended for alleged stealing of N43m from cargo driver
- VeryDarkMan detained after honouring Police invitation
He assured that the Nigeria Police Force remains committed to fostering a cooperative and trustful relationship between the police and the communities they serve.
“The IGP has not issued any such directive encouraging violence against law enforcement officers. Instead, he has called on citizens to report instances of police misconduct through appropriate channels. This approach underscores the importance of accountability and maintaining the rule of law, rather than resorting to violent actions.
