The Benue State Police Command has arrested two men in connection with the brutal murder of an elderly woman accused of witchcraft in Egba village, Agatu Local Government Area.
The incident, which occurred on Christmas Eve, has been described as part of a growing problem of mob justice in the state. Police spokesperson SP Catherine Anene confirmed the arrests of 50-year-old Bako and 40-year-old Oyaje Clement for their alleged involvement in the killing.
Speaking on the case, Anene expressed concern over the rising trend of targeting elderly individuals under accusations of witchcraft. “This is a troubling issue in the state, where young people take the law into their own hands and resort to killing elderly individuals over unproven allegations of witchcraft,” she said.

She detailed the events leading to the arrests, stating, “On December 24, 2024, around 7:00 p.m., the police received information about the murder of an aged woman in Egba village. Prompt investigations led to the apprehension of two suspects connected to the crime.”
Anene reaffirmed the commitment of the police to ensure justice for the victim and called on the public to abandon acts of jungle justice. “Taking the law into one’s hands is unacceptable. We urge everyone to report any suspicions to the appropriate authorities rather than resorting to violence,” she added.
The police continue to investigate the case and assure the public of their dedication to addressing such incidents and holding perpetrators accountable.
