Nigerian Institution of Mechanical Engineers (NIMechE), Lagos State chapter, has charged real estate developers to make efforts to curb carbon emissions into the atmosphere to reduce global warming.
They gave this charge at the induction of new corporate and student members into the institution and the 2024 public lecture with the theme, ‘Leveraging technology to decarbonise building and real estate developments for a more sustainable future.’
National Chairman of NimechE, Alhassan Mohammed, who was represented by his Vice, Komolafe Amos, said most of the problems faced globally emanated from the emission of carbon into the atmosphere.
“There is the need to make sure real estate developers decarbonise the environment because the more we take in carbon the more life is shortened. So globally, people are trying to decarbonise the environment to make sure that we reduce the carbon content that we are admitting into our system,” he said.
Principal Consultant, BSquare Management Consult, Dr Omopeju Afanu, who was the guest speaker, accused the real estate industry of releasing over 30 per cent of carbon into the atmosphere, making the sector more responsible for emissions.She, therefore, called on Nigerians to build smart houses to reduce carbon emissions.
“We need to look at how we can leverage technology. A lot of people have started doing it, but we need to create more awareness about it! We need to let people take cognisance of the fact that they can start integrating technology into their homes,” Afanu stated.
Chairman, NIMechE, Lagos chapter, Omobayowa Erinle, charged the newly admitted members to engage in best practices in Mechanical Engineering.
“As student members, they need to learn and be mentored by the practitioners because what they learn in the university and what is in real life are a bit different so to make it easy for them to transition from an academic environment to a practical environment, they need to be mentored by us,” he said.
