ENUGU – No fewer than 12,800 ad-hoc electoral staff will be recruited by the Enugu State Independent Electoral Commission (ENSIEC) for the forthcoming Enugu State local government elections.

It would be recalled that ENSIEC had fixed Sept. 21, 2024, for council polls into the 17 chairmanship and 260 ward councilorship positions in Enugu State.

The Chairman of ENSIEC, Prof. Christian Ngwu, disclosed this to newsmen on Thursday in Enugu while warning against the activities of scammers that might defraud ad-hoc electoral staff applicants.

Ngwu said that there would be at least three ad-hoc electoral staff in each of the state’s 4,145 polling units for the council elections.

He disclosed that the ad-hoc staff would be holding their training few days to the election.

According to him, the training might probably be on Tuesday or Wednesday next week.

“Wednesday, Sept. 18, will be preferable so that they will not forget what they have learnt and it will be fresh in their memories before Saturday, Sept. 21, which is the D-day,” he said.

The chairman also warned those applying for the ad-hoc electoral job to be wary of scammers.

He cautioned that applicants should follow the official channel of advert on the job and not to give a kobo to anybody or attend any unofficial training or gathering for the job.

Ngwu noted that the information circulating on social media regarding training for “ENSIEC electoral ad-hoc staff is not from the commission”.

“ENSIEC urges everyone to disregard this misleading information,” he said.

He explained that on early Sept. 12, “which is today, the commission received a report of an unauthorised training for ENSIEC ad-hoc electoral staff to be held in one of the council areas.

“The commission quickly moved in personnel of the Department of State Service (DSS) to verify the information and to stop such illegal move.

“The DSS personnel confirmed the development. They have to stop the illegal and unauthorised training and instantly dispelled the gathering since it might lead to bigger scam,” he added.
