    LAGOS – Ethiopian Airlines on Thursday deployed its newly acquired aircraft, Airbus 350-1000 to the Nigerian route with pantry and fanfare.

    Ethiopian Airline is the first commercial airline in Africa to operate the aircraft brand.

    The airline also has plans to acquire additional three A350-1000, thereby bringing the aircraft brand in its fleet to four.

    The aircraft, which touched down at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos at 12:15p.m, was welcomed with water cannon salute by the firefighters from the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) and dignitaries from Lagos and Ethiopia.

    The airline had taken delivery of the aircraft on Tuesday from Airbus factory in Toulouse, France and Nigeria was the first country it would operate the widebody aircraft to.

    The aircraft touched down in Lagos with 272 passengers, comprising 15 passengers in business class and 257 in economy class.

    Speaking at the arrival of the aircraft, Mr. Wondwossen Beyene, General Manager, Ethiopian Airlines, Nigeria, said that the A350-1000 boasts a revolutionary design with innovative aerodynamics and a carbon-fibre fuselage, powered by the fuel-efficient Rolls-Royce Trent XWB engines, ensuring a quieter, smoother journey for long-haul travel.

    Beyene described the aircraft as a game-changer in the aviation industry, boasting unparalleled comfort, efficiency, and technological advancements, assuring that on board, passengers would experience unparalleled comfort on the aircraft.

    He explained that the aircraft is the first to feature Thales’s AVANT Up inflight entertainment system and the HBC+ connectivity system, providing travellers with luxurious amenities, high speed internet connection, large screens, unique landscape camera and spacious seating with direct aisle access for all business class seats.

    Beyene commended the effort of the Ethiopian Airlines’ team, the Nigerian Government, the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) and the Lagos State Government for their support towards the airline in recent time, maintaining that this would not have been possible without their fervent cooperation.

    He added: “This aircraft will not only elevate the travel experience for passengers, but also strengthen trade and economic ties between Africa and the rest of the world.

    “We are expecting three more Airbus A350-1000 aircraft in a few months ahead. This marks a significant milestone in African aviation, as Ethiopian Airlines becomes the first airline on the continent to introduce this cutting-edge aircraft.” 

    The aircraft was piloted into Nigeria by Capt. Sisay Kebede.
