The match coverage of the Super Falcons’ round of 16 defeat to England gained the highest viewership figures of the Women’s World Cup in the UK thus far, report.
The engagement was multi-faceted, with a peak audience of 5.2m tuning in on with an additional 2.6m streams across BBC iPlayer and Notably, the digital platforms also registered an impressive tally of more than 2m requests for game highlights and clips.
The Super Falcons were the much better side on the night in Brisbane but England maintained their composure to go through on penalties, winning 4-2 to seal their spot in the last eight.
Across the Atlantic, the USA’s game with Sweden attracted a combined audience of 2.79m on Fox and Telemundo. Fox’s broadcast had an average of 2.51m viewers and peaked at 4.07m. Peacock, Universo, and Telemundo’s streaming platforms attracted 274,000 Spanish-language viewers.
In Australia, Seven, the country’s free-to-air broadcaster, had an average of 3.56m viewers for the Matildas’ win over Denmark. The game’s streaming was also impressive, with 384,000 streams on 7plus, setting a new platform record. This viewership even surpassed the audiences for the Australian Football League and the National Rugby League grand finals last year, making the Matildas’ match the highest-rated TV programme of 2023 in Australia.
