The family of a young man identified as Henry Obasi, who was killed by members of a dreaded gang in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, in September 2023, has asked police authorities to identify, arrest and prosecute the killers of their brother to serve justice on the matter.

The Obasi family lamented that since the tragic incident occurred on Iwofe Road, near the Saint John’s Catholic Church about 9:20 in what they described as ‘a senseless act of violence,’ which claimed Henry’s life on the streets of Port Harcourt over a year ago, the culprits were still walking freely in the city.

Eyewitnesses confirmed that Henry was trailed and shot while returning home from work and his body was later evacuated by police operatives.

A resident and co-worker of the deceased, who pleaded anonymity, revealed that Henry and his elder brother, Solomon Obasi, had received threats from a deadly gang months before the incident. The gang had allegedly assaulted and almost killed Solomon, forcing the brothers to flee the city.

He suspects that the same gang may be responsible for Henry’s murder, suggesting that the killing may be a case of mistaken identity or a message meant for Solomon.

“Henry was a gentle soul and a good worker. Everyone loved him at our workplace. He didn’t deserve to die like that,” he said.

The Rivers State Police Command has confirmed the incident and launched an investigation to apprehend the killers. Public Relations Officer, SP Grace Iringe Koko, assured that the command was working to bring the perpetrators to justice.

The community is still reeling from the tragedy as residents seek increased security measures to prevent such incidents in future.
