New Super Eagles coach, Finidi George will open a training camp made up of home-based players ahead of next month’s must-win 2026 World Cup qualifier against South Africa, according to SCORENigeria.
The Super Eagles are hard pressed to beat Bafana Bafana of South Africa in Uyo on June 7 so as to get their World Cup qualifying campaign back on track after a laboured start.
They were held to a 1-1 draw in Uyo by Lesotho, before they again drew 1-1 with Zimbabwe in November.
They are third in Group C with two points, a point behind second-placed South Africa.
“There is a plan in place for a camp to be opened early before the main team, this will involve players from the domestic league,” an official informed.
“This will be easy for Finidi being Enyimba coach for the past two years because he has an idea of the players in the league who deserve to get such a chance.”
His mandate as Super Eagles coach is to qualify the country to the 2026 World Cup and also involve more home-based players in the team. Last season, Finidi led Enyimba to a record ninth NPFL Championship.
The Aba club is now second on the NPFL standings with six rounds of matches to the end of the current season.
