The Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO)has awarded honourary doctorate degrees to three prominent Nigerian leaders during its 36th convocation ceremony on Saturday, in recognition of their contributions to national development and humanitarian efforts.
The distinguished recipients included First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, Governor Hope Uzodinma of Imo State, and Governor Babangida Zulum of Borno State.
FUTO’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Nnenna Oti, lauded the honorees for their outstanding impact on the lives of the Nigerian people.
She emphasized that Senator Tinubu was honored for her humanitarian services and unwavering dedication to advancing education, particularly her establishment of NGOs focused on youth development, girl-child education, and women empowerment.
“Mrs. Tinubu’s impact transcends Nigeria, making her a true role model,” Prof. Oti stated.
In her acceptance speech, the First Lady expressed deep gratitude to the university and its management for the honour.

She also extended congratulations to Governor Uzodinma and Governor Zulum. Reflecting on her experiences as the President’s wife, she stressed the importance of patriotism, particularly in the area of environmental preservation.
“We cannot deny the effects of global warming, even though Nigeria has been relatively fortunate,” she said, urging citizens to join in the collective effort to protect the environment.
In support of this initiative, she announced plans to launch the “Green Club” to raise awareness on plastic waste disposal across the nation.
She also made a generous donation of N50 million as an endowment fund for the best graduating female student of FUTO.
Governor Hope Uzodinma reaffirmed his commitment to President Bola Tinubu’s administration, promising to sponsor one of FUTO’s school projects as a contribution to the university’s growth.
Governor Babangida Zulum, in his remarks, expressed gratitude to the university for the honour and pledged to strengthen ties between the institution and Borno State, with an eye on further development.
