LAGOS – Senator Nenadi Esther Usman, the recently appointed Chairman of the Labour Party National Caretaker Committee, has shown her dedication to rejuvenating the party in the face of its existing difficulties.

At the committee’s first meeting in Abuja yesterday, Nenadi stressed the aim of reshaping the Labour Party into a viable option for Nigerians.

Senator Usman urged committee members to display commitment and honesty in their duties, underlining the significance of their efforts for both the party and the nation.

“We are embarking on a mission to save the Labour Party and our cherished Nigeria. The impact of this committee goes beyond party lines, presenting us with a crucial task,” she remarked.

She guaranteed that, with divine support, the Labour Party would become a platform for all Nigerians seeking change or unhappy with the current situation.

Senator Datti Baba-Ahmed, the Labour Party’s vice presidential candidate in the last election, echoed these sentiments. Speaking on behalf of the party’s presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, he commented on the current economic challenges, stating that the Labour Party had previously alerted the public to potential crises under the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

He expressed optimism that the Labour Party would capitalize on its achievements in the 2023 elections to secure a majority in the National Assembly and win the presidential election in 2027.

Baba-Ahmed declared, “We encountered obstacles during our transition but successfully overcame them, a feat few parties of our size could achieve. We stand as a strong presence in Africa, having fought for our 10 million votes, even though only 6 million were officially recognized.”

He bemoaned the current state of the nation, pointing out resource mismanagement, security challenges, and increasing hunger. He linked these shortcomings to the negligent governance that ensued after the Labour Party’s electoral triumphs.

During the gathering, Hon. Ikechukwu Emetu, Abia State’s deputy governor, delivered a message on behalf of Governor Alex Otti, urging committee members to prioritize the Labour Party’s advancement and avoid actions detrimental to its interests.

Senator Darlington Nwokocha, the committee’s secretary, pledged their dedication to selecting officials across different party echelons within the set timeframe. “We have initiated this process and are devoted to engaging in extensive outreach and consultations to ensure capable leaders are elected from the grassroots to the national convention,” he affirmed.
