One hundred women in Hayin Banki community, Igabi Local Government Area of Kaduna State have been empowered with N1 million each in a bid to ease the hardship being experienced in the country and create sustainable livelihoods for their families.

The support, funded by the Global Peace Foundation, was presented to the five women cooperative societies formed to combat poverty in the community.

Speaking at the presentation of cheques to the beneficiaries, the Country Director, Global Peace Foundation Nigeria (GPFN), Reverend Joseph John Hayab, urged the beneficiaries to use the support they have received to better their lives and that of their families.

“We started the project last year and we have come to this community virtually every month in the last 10 to 12 calendar months either engaging them in conflict analysis, on nonviolent communication, freedom of religious belief and everything that matters to build their capacity; to know how to mitigate whatever comes their way in the future.”

He explained that the foundation gave the women a capital of N1 million (N200,000) per cooperative to start businesses for sustainable livelihoods.

He hoped that with the intervention, women would become financially independent, thereby creating peaceful coexistence within the community.

Elizabeth Hassan, Coordinator, Bethel Candle of Hope for the Vulnerable, said her organisation collaborated with GPF to anchor the activity targeted at women because the woman was the centre of every family.

Sheikh Halliru Maraya, Northern Coordinator, GPFN, said the foundation decided to conduct the programme in many nooks and crannies in the country with a view to alleviating the poverty situation in the country.
