The Media Charity Foundation (MCF) has called for adequate and lasting welfare for journalists and other media workers in the country.

The chairman board of trustees (BoT) of the MCF, Mr Henry Atenaga and Secretary Ikechi Ibeji, made the call on Wednesday when they visited the Group Chief Executive Officer (GCEO) and Editor-in-Chief, Print, of Media Trust Group (MTG), Malam Ahmed Shekarau, at the corporate headquarters of the MTG.

Atenaga said the MCF is intended to provide “support and help, or whatever you call it, to journalists who are in distress because of the nature of the job.”

Shekarau was represented by the MTG General Editor, Malam Hamza Idris.

Atenaga said someone can have health challenges, or professional challenges, like a journalist being arrested for speaking the truth.

“Any of those things can happen to every journalist when you’re on the job, especially as professionals. So, they sometimes need legal support for those arrested. Like you die or you have an accident, your family will need support and things like that,” he said.

He urged government and media professionals to see the initiative as theirs.

He assured of the judicious and accountable use of the funds and the foundation.
