The Ogun State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Anthony Uga, has warned motorists plying the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway against speed violation stressing that it is the major cause of crashes on the road.

Uga made this statement on Thursday while reacting to an accident that claimed five lives and left four people injured along the Fidiwo section of the expressway.

He also encouraged motorists not to turn the expressway into a race course because of the good condition of the road.

reported that five people died while four others were injured in an accident that occurred on Thursday around the Fidiwo Bridge, near Ogunmakin along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

The accident which occurred at about 2:48 pm was said to have involved a red Prome bus with number plate MUS191HA and a golden colour Toyota Camry car with registration AKD754BG.

A statement released by the spokesperson for the Ogun FRSC, Florence Okpe, revealed that the accident was caused by wrongful overtaking, excessive speed, and tyre bust.

The injured persons were said to have been taken to Victory Hospital, Ogere Remo for medical treatment, while the corpses were deposited at the FOS Morgu e, Ipara Remo.

The statement read in part, “The command carried out a rescue operation on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway around Fidiwo Bridge at about 1448hrs.

“The crash involved nine persons (six female adults and three male adults) and a total of four persons were injured while five persons lost their lives from the crash (three female adults and two male adults). Two vehicles were involved with registration numbers MUS191HA a Prime bus red colour and a Toyota Camry car AKD754BG gold colour.

“Probable causes of the crash were wrongful overtaking, speeding, and tyre bust which led to the loss of control and veering off the road. The injured victims were taken to Victory Hospital Ogere while the corpses were deposited at FOS Morgue Ipara Remo.”

had reported on Wednesday that an accident around the NASFAT section of the same expressway around 9.56 am involved two trucks and a bus, killing five people and leaving 10 others injured.

The accident was blamed on the reckless driving on the part of one of the trucks’ drivers who made a sudden U-turn without trafficating, causing the truck behind it and another bus to lose control and ram into each other.
