The Managing Director of a gas company along the newly constructed 6-lane Aguiyi Ironsi Boulevard in Umuahia has been arrested by the Abia State government for damaging a manhole and pedestrian walkway on the road.
The Commissioner for Information, Okey Kanu, revealed this at the Government House, Umuahia.
He cautioned that the Abia State government will no longer tolerate the deliberate destruction of facilities meant for public use.
The state government is using this opportunity to call on communities, traditional rulers, and youths to take ownership of all government properties within their communities.

“Government cannot be spending billions of Naira to ensure that necessary infrastructure is put in place for the comfort and convenience of the citizenry and unscrupulous individuals will be busy destroying these properties”, Kanu said.
He expressed disappointment that these actions contradicted the government’s initiatives to transform Umuahia and Aba into smart cities.
Providing more details, Mr. Kingsley Agomoh, the General Manager of Umuahia Capital Development Agency (UCDA), mentioned that more than 15 manholes have been damaged along the recently opened 6-lane Aguiyi Ironsi Boulevard.
“More than 15 manholes have been removed and destroyed along the Boulevard. It is something no government should tolerate,” Agomoh said.
