ABUJA: In a bid to address growing public dissatisfaction with Nigeria’s judiciary, the Federal House of Representatives has called for a comprehensive review of the country’s justice system.

The Committee, chaired by Deputy Speaker, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu, has been tasked with consulting experts, civil society, and citizens to gather inputs for meaningful reforms with a deadline set for December 2025.

Presenting the Motion, Ganiyu Adele Ayuba Hon. Ayuba who represents Alimsho Federal constituency under the platform of All Progressive Congress (APC), Lagos, expressed concern over the delays in the dispensation of justice, warning that the continued inefficiency could erode public trust and undermine democratic progress.

The Lawmaker noted that the judiciary, constitutionally tasked with ensuring swift and fair justice, has seen cases in trial courts linger for years.

He noted that the prolonged legal battles such as chieftaincy disputes and unresolved commercial litigation, as well as the excessive detention of suspects awaiting trial, as critical issues harming the public’s confidence in the legal system.

“The Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), enshrines the right to a prompt determination of civil rights and obligations,” Hon. Ayuba stated, referencing Section 36(1) of the Constitution.

He further noted that, despite constitutional provisions for expedited justice, including timeframes for election matters and appeals, delays persist.

The Lawmaker warned that if immediate action is not taken to reduce the backlog of cases and expedite justice delivery, there is a risk that citizens could take the law into their own hands.

To achieve this, the House has mandated its Committee on Constitutional Review to undertake a comprehensive overhaul of the system

These committees are expected to report their findings to the House within four (4) weeks, as lawmakers seek solutions to restore confidence in the judiciary and promote the rule of law.
