Police operatives in Ogun are hunting for culprits who killed a couple identified as Kehinde and Bukola Fatinoye and set their remains ablaze at their residence at Government Reservation Area (GRA) in Ibara area of Abeokuta, the state capital early in the first day of the year.
The culprits completed their dastardly act with the abduction of the son and maid of the couple.
It was gathered that the culprits had trailed the couple home as they returning from the cross over service early Sunday morning.
While Kehinde, the husband is said to be a staff of the Central Bank of Nigeria, the wife, Bukola was a staff of the Federal University of Agriculture (FUNNAB), Abeokuta.
It was learnt that the criminals later threw the son and the maid into a river along the Adigbe-Obada axis of Abeokuta.
The police have said that while the maid has been rescued, the son has not been found.
The incident had thrown relatives, church members and colleagues of the couple into mourning early in the new year.
Speaking at the residence of the deceased, the Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), Prof. Olusola Babatunde Kehinde said police must ensure that those behind the dastardly act are arrested and prosecuted.
Prof Kehinde described the death of Mrs Fatinoye, a senior staff of the University, and her husband as gruesome and a shock to the University community.
The Ogun State Police Command Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Oyeyemi confirmed the sad incident.
He said it was a case of assassination.
“When the couple were killed, their remains were equally set ablaze”.
“After the dastard act, the couple’s son and their housemaid were kidnapped and threw them into a river. Though the housemaid has been rescued alive, we are yet to see the son”.
He added that a suspect has been arrested over the incident.
Abimbola assured that others involved in murder of the couple would be arrested and made to face the law.
