Real Madrid’s Rodrygo expressed disappointment at being excluded from the 30-man shortlist for the 2024 Ballon d’Or.
Despite a strong season with 17 goals and 9 assists in 51 appearances, the 23-year-old Brazilian forward missed out on the prestigious nomination.
“I was upset, I think I deserved it,” Rodrygo told ESPN. He acknowledged the merit of the nominees but believed his performance warranted inclusion. Teammates Jude Bellingham, Vinicius Jr., Dani Carvajal, Federico Valverde, Antonio Rudiger, and Toni Kroos all received nominations. Kylian Mbappe, who recently joined Real Madrid, also made the shortlist.
According to Rodrygo, his ability to play a variety of positions may have hurt his chances. He clarified, “Often, I am just filling spaces,” demonstrating his flexibility to meet the demands of the group. On October 28, in Paris, the Ballon d’Or winner will be revealed.
