    The Ijaw Youths Council Worldwide has reiterated the call for Nigeria to practice true federalism.

    The Council with leaders of various youth bodies from different ethnic nationalities in the Niger Delta region said this in a communique after a peace and security summit to commemorate the 56 years passage of Major Adaka Boro held at the weekend in Port Harcourt.

    The Council led by Mr Alaye Theophilus called on the federal government to initiate a process of restructuring the country as a matter of national importance since the burden of leadership and development is too concentrated in the presidency.

    The Council called on the federal government as a matter of urgency to begin the implementation of the 3% host community fund for the people of the region to enjoy the benefits derivable from the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA).

    Reaffirming their commitment to the unity, development, peace, and security of the Niger Delta region, they urged the Federal Government to prioritise the welfare and well-being of the people, particularly the youth.

    Warning against the escalation of the political crisis in Rivers State from escalating into a breakdown of law and order, they stressed the need for he gas flaring effect fund being collected by the federal government to be directed to the impacted communities rather than going into the federal government purse.

    They called on the federal government to distribute pipeline contracts among different ethnic groups to enhance effectiveness and yield better results.

    The Council also appealed to the federal government to remove the NDDC From the Treasury single Account (TSA) as well as support the various states to reduce crime and create a business friendly environment for all.

    They added: “Government should collaborate with various Youth and communities leaders to provide a better waterway security in the region to boast the blue economy.

    “As a matter of National urgency the federal government should through the NNPC to direct all IOCS operating in our region to relocate their head office to the Niger Delta region.”
