As Nigeria marked its 64th Independence anniversary, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu called on citizens, especially Lagos residents, to renew their commitment to the values that unite the nation, such as hard work, resilience, and a shared belief in a brighter future.
Speaking at the Independence Day celebration held at Lagos House, Marina, the governor urged Nigerians to support the government in overcoming national challenges.
In his address, Sanwo-Olu stressed the importance of unity and collective effort in building a prosperous Nigeria, urging citizens to rise above divisions and distrust.
“On this 64th Independence Anniversary, let us recommit ourselves to the values that unite us: hard work, resilience, and a shared belief in a brighter tomorrow. Let us rise above our differences and distrust. Lagos thrives when we all thrive, when we come together as one people, one city, one Nigeria,” he said.
The governor reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to making Lagos a beacon of hope, not just for Nigerians but for Africa and the world.
He noted that the state’s continued progress hinges on a strong partnership between the government and the people.
“We are in this together. I will continue to serve with all my heart, but I need your partnership, trust, and hope. We can make Lagos a model for Nigeria—a place where every citizen feels valued, secure, and empowered.”
Sanwo-Olu encouraged Lagosians to demonstrate the power of unity and shared vision, reminding them of the state’s leadership in innovation, commerce, and cultural expression.
He emphasized that his administration would focus on fostering a transparent relationship with the public, ensuring that the government remains accountable to the people.
“No government can succeed without the trust of its people. In the coming months, my administration will be more transparent than ever before. We will strengthen communication channels and ensure that your voices are heard,” he added.

He emphasized that his government is focused on building not just physical infrastructure but also strong relationships with the people of Lagos, founded on mutual respect and accountability.
Sanwo-Olu also acknowledged the frustration and distrust felt by many citizens due to leadership failures, but he called for renewed faith in the nation’s future.
“We are a state of over 20 million dreams, a melting pot of cultures, talents, and aspirations. When the world looks at Lagos, it sees Nigeria’s brightest hope, its most vibrant energy. Despite the challenges we face, I stand before you with confidence that together, we can build a Lagos and a Nigeria that fulfill the dreams of every citizen.”
The governor made a direct appeal to the youth of Lagos, recognizing their energy, creativity, and passion for change.
“To the youth of Lagos, I hear you. I see you. Your energy and your desire for a better Nigeria are not in vain. You are not just the future; you are the present. Together, we will create opportunities where there seem to be none. We will build a Lagos where your talents are celebrated and rewarded,” he said.
Sanwo-Olu expressed his gratitude to the elders who have contributed to the development of Lagos, assuring them that their sacrifices would be honored by creating a city of opportunities for future generations.
“We owe you a debt of gratitude for the sacrifices you’ve made in building this city. We will ensure that Lagos remains a place where your children and grandchildren can thrive.”
